We've given her tylenol, pediacare and saline nasal spray. She does not have a fever. Luckily, she's eating and sleeping fine. But we feel bad for her since she's having trouble breathing and has some drainage.

to follow up on some of the answers... Yes, we've talked to our doctor. Additionally my dad and wife are doctors -- and my step mom is a nurse (but none of them are pediatricians) -- we're just looking for some more tried and true suggestions from parents who have been there before. And in response to two of the questions -- you can't give Dimetapp until kids until they're 18 months and it can't be allergies because the baby is too young and hasn't been exposed long enough to anything and doesn't have the immune system to develop allergies.

A cold can last 7 to 10 days. I'd say if she's not noticeably better by Tuesday to take her to the Dr. In the meantime, have you tried a humidifier or sitting in the bathroom with the shower running as hot as possible? You can do a saline nasal rinse up to 3 times a day. Also, I used to put the Vicks Vapor Rub on my chest when holding my kids when they were sick as infants.

I agree with the humidifier/vaporizer comments. I also suggest propping the head of her crib/bassinet up with either a pillow under the head of the mattress (not that the baby will sleep on - but inbetween the mattress & crib springs) or a brick under the head side of her crib posts. It'll assist gravity with draining that mucous out instead of it just sitting inside her nasal cavaties.
The saline spray should work. Are you also suctioning the mucous with the bulb syringe?
They also have the Vapo-steam type things you put in the shower & it releases the stuff when the hot water hits it. Not that I recommend putting a baby in a hot shower, but maybe you could buy one of those and just have the baby in the bathroom as the steam from the shower is working it's magic.

Good luck!

while your waiting for the dr. to return your call (you did check w/ the dr...right?) how about a steam bath. Go into the bathroom and get some steam going. Might help break up chest congestion as well as relieving the stuffy nose. Just make sure after the steam bath, don't sit baby right in front of a fan or air conditioner as babies pours are open and baby could end up getting a cold...

Go into the bathroom with the door shut and let the shower run to steam it up in there. This will open her little nose up.
Good ole vicks vapor rub on her chest will help, too. Keep her warm, but not too bundled.
Good luck, and I hope she feels better.

I had an old pediatrician advise against Vicks, but now they make one for babies. if it makes you nervous you could open the jar and put near the baby's crib. try a humidifier.... as long as the baby is eating and sleeping ok, i wouldn't worry too much about medicating such a young one.

Take her to a doctor and have her check for RSV. Not only premies get it but newborns to 2yrs of age can get it too!! My daughter had it at two mnths old after we arrived in Nevada and had it for 6wks. Her cousin also had it and he's 5 days older than my daughter. My daughter had it worst than he did though. But we had it takened care of when we found out that she had it.

they make baby vicks rub now i think you can use it at that age. I always used a vaporizor or humidifier and put a little vicks on the vaporizor itself that way you aren't putting it right on the baby but it gets in the air so they can breath it in. hope she feels better soon
