They don't need to be in water. The breathe air like people.
They need water to swim and cool off, some need to eat in water, but all of them need time to dry off too. There should be a way for yours to get out of the water if he wants.

Letting a pond turtle run loose in a house is not necessarily a good thing.

- Most rooms are kept cooler and/or drier than turtles want
- It is vaguely stressful to be shuttled back and forth between different habitats too often. Also, pond turtles feel safer in or near water
- Pond turtles need to be in water to hunt and eat.

You can actually raise a pond turtle in a dry tank if you need to- they do not have a biological need for water like a fish or amphibian does, but if you want to let it wander a bit, it would be better for it to be outside- ideally where there is a pond and wild stuff to interact with and eat.

A turtle needs a place in it's enclosure where it can get totally out of the water and bask. If you have him in a totally aquatic enclosure your turtle isn't going to live very long. Also Turtles need special lighting. They need a special UV light made for reptiles. If they don't have this they can't process certain vitamins and they get sick. Then they die. What you should do is check out this page and make sure you set up the enclosure they way it tells you. Otherwise your turtle is going to die.

It all depends on what species of turtle you mean.
sliders (terrapins) can live for days out of water.
Soft shelled turtles will dry out in under 24 hours.
Tortoise and box turtles do not need to go into water
Sea turtles cannot survive out of water for more than oneor two hours.

depends on what kind of turtle. if they are meant to be in water, i wouldnt experiment it. i used to keep my turtles in a large tank and filled it half with water and half with rocks. they ALWAYS stayed on the rocks side, which scares me because they're water turtles! so i keep them in tank only with water now. i've had them for about 6 years!!

Not all day, but a few hours won't hurt it. :)
