My sister is not allergic to poison Ivey. She really likes it as a matter of fact. So when neighborhood kids started pulling up her flowers, and just basically messing up her garden; she planted poison Ivey around the edge of her garden. Is this wrong to do? (I mean now all the neighborhood kids have poison Ivey)

I don't think it's wrong of her at all. It won't hurt the kids and will hopefully teach them a lesson on keeping out of other people's yards.

I'd probably have had the police over to haul the kids in for tresspassing and then sued the parents for emotional distress because the kids had ruined her gardens.

This is not safe..Your sister may not have a reaction to the Poison Ivy now, however she could become allergic to it ..It is not a pretty sight to see someone suffering from Poison Ivy breakout ! I don't think your sister would want to see the effects of this on a child,or on an adult!I saw my Mother go through hell .She was very allergic to Poison Ivy, some neighbors were burning a wooded area behind the house , Mom walked through the smoke!! She was unaware of what they were burning, she started to itch , her eyes were running,it got up her nose ..It was awful, her face was so swollen , she looked like she had been stung by a thousand bees!! A nurse had to come to the house to give her shots, for the swelling and pain ..She could not even get out of bed!!I am 58 years old this happened when I was about 10,I still remember this !! I think your sister needs to get that Poison Ivy out ASAP , plant some English IVY it is so pretty...Then she needs to go talk to the parents of these problem children,or call the police and have them talk to the parents and to these problem children .. I would post No Trespassing signs, and warn the parents and the kids ,before you call the police on them..
I hope this helps you.. SMILES : )

HA HA! IF it were ME I would have put an electrical fence up to shock the little boogers!!! But LOL poison ivy sounds even BETTER! Yeah not only was it not wrong (they were breaking the LAW by tresspassing, and distruction of private property), she can plant anything she wants in her OWN garden (unless the plant is illegal, like marijuana). IF they just stay OUT of her garden then they wouldn't be suffering... hey I might do that to MY backyard... to bad I have no idea if my children ARE allergic to it (I'm certain my husband is), because I know I'm NOT!!! If I were your sister I would go to all the parents of the children who showed up with the poison ivy and tell them WHY their children have poison ivy, if they do not choose to punish their kids (I know I WOULD) then they will at least warn their kids to stay AWAY from your sister's yard, even if they don't agree with what she's done there is nothing they can do about it, it's not illegal!

In away it is very wrong. But on the other hand why are the neighborhood kids in her yard picking flowers? You might want to let your sister know that in these days and times people may try to sue her for hurting there kids. In one case I have heard about a child died from going into a firnds yard playing with friends who owned the house and contacted poison Ivy. The child died because he was so allergic.
Please be careful. I personally would not take chances. I would put up a fence or talk with the neighborhood parents asking them to keep the kids from picking the flowers.

Wow, kinda touchy subject here.

If the plant is not illegal to possess or plant, then your sister hasn't broken any law...yet.

However, by DELIBERATELY planting something so poisonous, your sister could be held responsible for any harm done by the poison ivy to any trespasser. Remember, in this country, we have nutjob criminals SUCCESSFULLY suing people for having weak roofing, when they fall through the roof trying to break into the house! Nutty, but true.

Maybe now your sis can have a sit-down with the parents of all the kids who have rashes, and tell them to stay out of her yard!

BTW, poison ivy is kind of hard to get rid of....

The kids should not have been digging up her flowers or going near them anyways, but I don't believe planting poison ivy was the way to go. She should have told their parents or contacted her neighborhood association ,if a neighborhood has one they usually put notice in the bullitens and contact the cops and report vandalism.

Good for them. A lot of parents don't even do anything about their kids nowadays. Now at least the plants in her yard can defend themselves.
