first off you need to leave the jewelry alone. Put it on and dont take it off for about a year. This is the hardest piercing to heal. Buy a bottle of the ear cleaning solution from Claire's, Icing, or Afterthoughts. It is all the same compnay. The small bottle is $2.50 and the big bottle is $8.00. First, take a shot glass of hot water and tip it onto your belly button. This will loosen the crud. Hold it on there for a minute or so. Then, use a q-tip and dip it in the cleaning solution and clean around the hole on both sides. This stuff will reduce the infection, the swelling and will relieve some of the pain. Until you know that the hole is completely healed, do not take the jewelry out for any reason. If for some reason you should happen to lose the ball and the jewelry starts to come out, GO TO YOUR PIERCIST IMMEDIATELY. They will help you get the jewelry back in and give you a new ball.

I forgot to add this- formerly advised by piercists, Dial is no longer the choice of antibacterial for them. Any soap that contains Triclosan as the active ingredient is not good for the new piercing because they can be harsh on the new skin cells. They are now advising an antimicrobial/germicidal medicated soap called Provon. My piercist is the former President of the Association of Professional Piercers and helped write the laws governing piercings. check out www.piercology.com

DO NOT COVER IT WITH A BANDAID OR A BANDAGE!!!!!!!! This restricts air flow and can cause the pierciing to take longer to heal due to lack of oxygen.

Dont use topical ointments as they are thick and greasy and can also cause restricted airlflow as well as superficial healing. Neosporin and the like will heal the top layer leaving the layers underneath unhealed and can cause infections to become trapped.

Well, my first bit of advice - most of what's on this page is either from people who haven't dealt with this or from people who could've done better. I've two holes in my navel, as well as various other ones, and navel piercings are most definitely the ones that give you the most lip.

First off, the reason it's infected is because you were playing with it - DON'T TOUCH IT. If you can change it without passing out or something, get a ring instead of a barbell - it's WAY easier to clean, and you don't have that problem with the balls pinching. Otherwise, leave it in (unless the balls look like they're disappearing into your stomach, then get some help).

Second, clean it 2 times/day with Provon - I recommend doing it at the end of a shower (or after about 5 minutes' soaking) to let the crusties wash off first. Only do this until the infection is gone, though - more will impede the healing process.

Third, clean it with the salt soak - but only once a week. More than that will dry it out. Table salt will work, but sea salt is better.

Fourth (and this is important), go to an herb store (not an herbalist, they're likely more expensive) and get either Goldenseal root powder or Oregon Grape root powder. Also buy empty capsules, size '00' (you can buy them filled but it's more expensive). To fill them you just pop them apart, get the powder in there - push it in, scoop it in, whatever - shake it down, and put the lid on. Dosage - Goldenseal is more potent, so take one capsule morning, noon, and night (try to space them as evenly as you can, about 8 hours between each one). With Oregon Grape root you'll want to take three in the morning, 2 at noon-ish, and 2-3 at night. Only continue this treatment for about two weeks. You can continue with the Oregon Grape sporadically, if your infection flares up again, but be a bit cautious of the Goldenseal. This bit is REALLY helpful - these plants act as natural antibiotics, except they don't kill all of the helpful bacteria in your body, they just take care of stuff that shouldn't be there.

Again - HANDS OFF!

Disclaimer: You're supposed to talk to a doctor before using any herbs. Don't take anything you're allergic to, etc, etc, watch out for drug interactions, don't drink and drive while pregnant, etc.

Good luck!

If it is already infected, the only way to get it to heal up is to take out the metal ring and let the wound drain. That infected stuff needs to come out, and the foreign body (the ring) in there will keep the infection in.
Once you have the ring out, you can do warm moist soaks - get some Epsom salts at the drug store, and make a solution of the epsom salts in water that is almost too hot to touch. Soak a wash cloth in this solution, and hold it on the infected area until it cools. The epsom salts will help kill the bacteria, and the heat of the moist wash cloth will increase the blood flow to the area and speed up the white blood cell activity there and speed up the healing.
It won't heal without you taking out the ring...and if it drains properly, you may not need antibiotics.
Good luck!

I used sea salt (from pet fish store) put some in a shot glass (I had to borrow 1 from the neighbor) fill with hot water, bend fwd, put the shot glass over the entire navel, stand up. Hold the glass on the area until the water is cool. I did it 3 times per day. It healed in about a week. Hurt like h-e-l-l while infected!

The quickest and fastest way to reduce the swelling is to use some ice. Leave the ring out permanently, your body rejects this as it is a foreign body. In other words it is simply not meant to be in there. Good luck.

First of all you have not said if you are on any other medications, prescribed by a DR or over the counter....If no meds, you may possibley use ibuprofen, or aleve. If you are on other meds, they may interact with what you are on. check with a pharmacist. Get yourself a tube of triple antibiotic ointment. put it on your belly button, cover it with a bandage or bandaid, and change it at least a couple of times a day.

Clean it. Scrub it, and disinfect it. Use soap and water or rubbing alchol. Make sure to keep dirt off of it and clean it daily. I would say before bed and after you have exercised or gone swimming. You might have to go get it repeirced since you took it out. But it's too late for that and don't try to fore it back in.
