THERE IS A 2 FOOT LONG SNAKE IN MY FRONT YARD.
It's been there for 3 weeks. It lives in a hole on my walkway--and it comes out during the day--but it goes back into the hole when we throw moth-balls at it. I'm in Florida and live across from a lake...HOW DO I KILL THIS THING?

Keep in mind I am female, and only my mom lives in the house--and we are both a little scared!

All Ideas are Appreciated!!!! THANK YOU!!

Dear--you and your Mom --please do not be scared of him! Black snakes are very good to have around. First off, it will not reach out and strike you unless it is stepped on. These snakes are very good to have around in your yard because they eats rats, mice, bugs, frogs, moles, toads and other snakes that are harmful. You have found that they have a tendency to come out in the day-- all he is trying to do is get warm in the sun being that they are cold blooded (cannot produce their own heat) like humans. They will not bother you at all. Back in Connecticut, we had plenty of black snakes and were glad because we knew that they were eating those other things that you definitely do not want in your yard. One snake can wipe them all out! In recent years, we had an old black snake that lived in the cellar even hibernating in a crevice in insulation in the winter. This snake was very old and easily over 7-8 feet in length. We were glad that he remained there because during spring, summer and fall, we would see him out in the yard or on the sidewalk catching some rays every year. He disappeared finally about 2 years ago when we had some siding put on the side of the house where he was at spooking him. Too bad, he was there every year like an old watch dog ( the dogs and cats did not mind him either). All in all the benefits outweigh getting rid of him. Just let him soak up the summer sun as that is all he wants to do (as well as eat those nasty other things) .

I use to live in Florida. You should never try and kill a snake on your own, just in case you get bit or something else unexpected. You should either call critter gitters or at the very least have a friend come over and help. If nothing else, maybe after chasing it down into the whole you can try and flood it out. But I would definately try calling critter gitters or a critter control of some kind and ask them before you try anything.

Call Animal Control. They specialize in this type of thing, and will probably be VERY glad it isn't another gator call!

Don't kill the snake. As the others have mentioned, he is one of the "good guys". Think of him as a rodent exterminator.

Come to think of it, though, if there was NO FOOD SUPPLY, he probably wouldn't be in your driveway! You might want to make sure there aren't mice or rats in the neighborhood first!

Rats are the worst thing you can have! The snake will try and evade you if it can.

I live in FL too...that's a 'black racer'. They don't bit and they do eat mice and other pests as said above but I don't like snakes either. One time I threw a large steeping stone on one to pin it down and they cut it in two with a pair of garden clippers.

Try putting some rat poison in some raw hamburger and throwing it out by the hole.

Black snakes should not bother people. They want to consume rodents. Most farmers want to keep these critters around. Call animal control so they can relocate the snake. Hope this helps!
