So I want to use my desktop to recieve the wireless signal and then send the signal out to my wireless router through its ethernet card.

I know, it's a wierd deal. The laptop is pretty old. Got it second hand. plus it doesnt have ethernet connection. and I just wanted to setup my own router to act like a repeater. The desktop has a stronger wireless card and antenna.

Set the WiFi router as an "AdHoc" this wilallow you to do it. But consult the manufactuers site of the router

Ok, if you have a wireless adapter in both the desk top and the laptop then yeah you should be able to set up an ad-hoc connection, but you won't have any internet connection. Ad-hoc is for a network without internet connectivity. It gets the networked computers communicating with each other, sending and receiving data and sharing tools like printers.

If all that is wrong is the laptops wireless adapter is not very strong, then buy one which is. Replace the old with the new, configure it to match the settings in both the router and the other computer and you should be good to go. If not then something is wrong with your router. If everything is configured properly, then both the laptop and the desktop should connect without any problems.

Listen, we can all tell you to get this, go do that, till the cows come home. I suggest you read up on this yourself and get the information in front of you so you can refer back to it as you work on this issue and any other wired or wireless networking situation. I first used a great little book called "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking", by Mark Edward Soper. I found it invaluable when I was first learning how to set up my home office and then later my business computer network.

I then bought other books which were also invaluable, but this first book is a strong informational sourse and will get anyone up and running in a short period of time, or point them in the right direction in gettng the proper tools and/or support. It is easy to read, not huge, rather small, about 330 pages without tiny print, but a regular font with pictures. It gives out information on all types of networking needs, on down to hooking up TiVo, game consoles, even security systems.

The basis meat of the book though is networking computers together, wired or wirelessly. It is a great book all around. I strongly suggest you buy it and then you will have a super resourse at your finger tips which you can read in two days and referance as needed. Good luck in fixing your networking problems. Have a really nice day!

Now how do you figure this? The AP has the line to the internet. So if your laptop is having trouble receiving the APs signal, how is it gonna connect to your PC?
You can use a crosscable to connect the laptop to your PC (if there's an ethernet card in the laptop as well), and have internet on your laptop through your computer. But most APs also have ethernetports, so if you have an ethernet card in your laptop, you might as well connect the laptop directly to your AP.
Or you could try setting up a second AP, closer to your laptop. That can work as a "go-between" between your laptop and the AP that has the internet connection.
