I have set up a wi-fi network several computers passwords SSID etc. So now I want to add WEP, can you help me please as to the sequence Passphrase e.g admin 1 2 3 4 is at the top in individual circles also down the table key 1. key 2 etc do I enter and match number 1 in a circle to number 1 in side key number 2 in a circle to number 2 in the side key and at the end press generate and watch everything I have carefully composed alter in front of my very eyes. I had all my network up and running just fine with my WEP but alas I don't know if my signal strength went down I had to disable WEP to get my network running again and am now hesitant to repeat previous mistakes. I have read the help several times and now am confused, if possibly I only need a passphrase plus 1 key any help will be greatly appreciated thankyou.

Are you referring to the default transmit key 1/2/3/4? You can leave that at the default, transmit key 1. When you connect to your Linksys in your browser, under the Wireless tab select Wireless Security, and select WEP for the security mode and then select 40 or 128 bit WEP. The default transmit key will be pre-selected to 1, and that's fine. You can usually enter a single passphrase and click the "generate" button once, and it will fill in the 4 keys automatically. Then (since default transmit key 1 is selected) you would put that first WEP key into your wireless clients to get them connected in a semi-secure fashion.

You also mentioned signal strength with and without WEP enabled, but this is unrelated. If WEP is on or off, it will have no effect on your signal strength, although that might appear to be the problem if you're no longer connecting, but really it's because you cannot associate anymore because the WEP key wasn't entered yet.

Now, all that said, here are some general guidelines: Change the default password on your wireless router. Turn on encryption as discussed. At least use WEP for minimal protection but it's better to use WPA PSK (Pre Shared Key) mode for home use. WEP can be broken easily by someone who knows how and has the right tools. Everyone always says "WEP is no good, it's too easy to crack" and I usually say, "Oh, really? Have you done it?" and 99% of the time the answer is no. Because it's NOT that easy for the average home user. I have done it and I like to say that WEP keeps your honest neighbors honest. But it will not hold back someone who has the tools and knowledge to break your key. So use WPA PSK. Also consider using MAC address filtering, you can do an "ipconfig /all" on your client to see the MAC address and then put that in the "permit only" MAC list.

Also, don't let anyone fool you into thinking that turning off SSID broadcast will make your wireless network secure, it will not. That only supresses the SSID in the beacon messages and is not meant to be a security feature, it's more to prevent accidental associations. But still, it's a "best practice" to change your SSID to something other than the default "linksys" in your case, and turn off SSID broadcast.

So in summary:
1. Change default password on router
2. Configure WPA PSK
3. Use MAC address filtering
4. Disable any type of remote administration
5. Enable any built-in firewall features
6. Block unknown external (WAN) requests
7. Change the default SSID and disable broadcast
8. Read the manual for your product for other security features.

wow, loser answer Mrs. Ed. besides, first make confident you've internet coming to the cable you're plugging into your router. in case you do, then you definately're both doing something incorrect with the router setup, or it will be more effective complicated than that. once you've a DSL modem, it desires to be in "go by ability of" or "bridge" mode. that way the router can assign IP addresses because it pleases without conflict. and also you want to apply an Ethernet cable. that is the in straightforward words ingredient which will artwork.
