The day 'the music' died, was February 3rd, 1959 when Jiles Perry "Jape" "The Big Bopper" Richardson, Jr., Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the pilot Roger Peterson were killed in a plane crash. The deaths of these three popular entertainers strongly affected the youths of that generation, and served as a focal point of disillusionment and the loss of innocence/coming of age for Don McLane's lengthy composition about the difficult times of unrest and social upheaveal which occurred in the years that followed.

The plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper crashed just as Holly's career was getting going, and all three died. The song I think mentions his bride - he had just married.
Some people think it is about the Day JFK was assassinated also - that could apply... but I think it is Holly.
Watch the movie "The Buddy Holly Story" - it's very good and has all of this stuff.

Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens all went down on the same plane. That's the day that Don McClain was referring to. Waylan Jennings was supposed to be on the plane but gave his seat up to the Big Bopper. I've heard various reports about why. Ranging from a poker bet to the fact that the Big Bopper was sick and didn't want to make the trip on the bus.

P.S. helixburger, are you sure you're 56? You should have known this one.

It is about all the music people in the 50's that died in a plane crash. Like Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper. It is supposed to be about how the music died on that day. I saw him in concert not too long ago and met him, nice guy as well.

Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and (I can't think of his name) the guy that sang "La Bamba".

"...and the three men I admired the most..."

p.s. There were four of them wanting to leave and only three seats. They tossed a coin and the loser had to give up his seat. The guy that lost his seat? Waylon Jennings of country & western fame.
