one is rotary, the other one is push button. I can't remember which is which!!

Pulse dialing is similar to turning a light switch off and on. The pulses are generated through the making and breaking of the telephone connection. The audible clicks are a side effect of this.

Pulse dialing or loop disconnect dialing, also called Rotary or Decadic dialing in the United Kingdom (because up to 10 pulses are sent), is pulsing in which a direct-current pulse train is produced by interrupting a steady signal ( Tone) according to a fixed or formatted code for each digit and at a standard pulse repetition rate.

Try this with a friend sometime,

It is possible to trick a phone system into thinking that a rotary dial is being used. To do this, one finds the little button, switch, or hook that is pushed down when you hang up the phone. To "dial" the digit 1, tap it once. For the digit 2, tap it twice QUICKLY (ten taps per second for UK phones and in North America). For the digit 3, use three taps, etc. The digit 0 is ten taps. (But see above if you are in Sweden, New Zealand or Oslo.) Be sure to give a quick pause between each number.

Most fixed-line phones now use dual tone multi frequency (DTMF, also called touch tone or tone dialing) rather than pulse dialing, but most telephone equipment retains support for pulse dialing for backward compatibility. ISDN and GSM mobile phones perform call setup using digital signaling systems.

So unless u want to try your skill at Morse Analog pulse dialing, as oppose to digital Tone Dialing, Set that button or switch on your phone to TONE.

A touch-tone phone makes tones in different frequencies for all the buttons. The best way to describe this is, you can play little songs by pushing the buttons if you practice a little. A pulse tone phone literally breaks the phone connection shortly, which produces an audible click. It breaks it 1 time for the number 1, 2 times for the number 2, and so on. 10 times for the number 0. You can trick a pulse phone system by tapping the button used to put the hook on very quickly and dail the number that way.

Pulse is analogue and Tone is Digital. Pulse is based on the amount of pulses in the line, you can try a little experiment here.
What you do is you get a phone with a button hangup. You tap on it fast in this way:

Try to dial a number using this. Even though it is somewhat of a useless experiment it works, and if you ever need to make an emergency call with a phone that can't dial because of a faulty touch-pad, or you are just really, really board, well then you can try this.

I believe that pulse is rotaryand tone is push button

tone is push rotary is pulse. some older push phones can still be set up for pusle...stupid though.

With a pulse dialing phone, you will hear a series of clicks when you push any number on the keypad. With a tone dialing phone, you will hear a musical tone when you push any number on the keypad. Many phones you can buy have a switch on them so you can choose either one when you dial.

Tone is when you press the buttons you just hear a beep, pulse is when you press the button you hear a number of clicks for whatever number you pushed.

pulse is the rotary setting. Don't use it though as you will not be able to use automated systems with it.
