A good herbal remedy is a plant called "Kava", or sometimes it is labelled "Kava Kava". You can often buy it in capsule form in pharmacies or health food stores. I don't think it is habit forming, but I'm not sure on that.
Some people are helped by having a normal bedtime routine. Having a hot bath or shower an hour before bed sometimes helps---it sets your body up for the night-time decrease in body temperature. Be sure your room is dark and cool. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day.
White noise (like radio hiss) can be helpful if you have other noises in your room (traffic sounds from outside, etc.) but I've never used it. Getting exercise during the day (but not too close to bedtime) can be a great help, too.

Turkey. There is also a pill you can buy in the supplement isle at Wal-Mart that my mother in law buys to help her, and I've had one, they work great. I can't remember the name of it, but it's in a brown bottle with a purple lable. They work good and you don't feel groggy in the morning. Something else you might try is having a tall glass of milk before you go to bed. And anything that would fill up your stomach. That's why people get sleepy after they eat, all of you blood circulation is going into your digestive tract to help it work faster, and that's what causes drowsiness. Other than that, try no sugars at least 4 hours before bed and maybe buying a new pillow. I know school causes stress, but don't get all worked up about it. It's just another year of learning. It'll be ok. If you need support, I'm here for ya! I'm a college student too! I know how it is!

Try valerian for sleep. It is herbal medicine used for this purpose for a long time. It takes few days to work so be patient. It is sometimes better than prescription sleeping pills. Considered mild but it does not fragment the sleep process.
I believe white noise refers to any continuous noise that the mind tunes out (or gets used to) with time and helps mask other stimulating factors or noises. Like the sound of surf or birds or even some music.

Have you tried eating a more organic diet? It might help. I used to sleep any where from 4 to 5 hours a night and now I sleep about 7. I eat only food that is organic. Also you might think of going to an acupuncturist. I know they have this relaxing thing that is amazing! I fell asleep! Right in the room while under going this treatment! I liked it and did it again. I think acupuncture is weird but it helped.

try taking a warm bath before bed it will relax you and make you sleepy. Try going to bed like half hour earlier each night and wake up at like 9 am every morning no matter how tired you are.

warm milk also makes you sleepy so if the bath doesn't work drink some before bed. and if you have a significant other have them give you a full body massage. that really works for me =) hehe good luck!
