"But Saphire, honey!" Loved the Kingfish. Did you know on the nights this showed aired many movie theaters would shut down? True, because everyone stayed home to watch Amos and Andy.

I do. And Sapphire and Mama and the Kingfish, George Stevens and Calhoun, the attorney. Andy Brown was the Kingfish's best friend, and Amos was the straight man. He was the only one with any sense.

Amos and Andy was a bitter pill for black people in America because of the plight of black people in this country at the time in which it came about. White people were in a mood for humor at our expense because the original Amos and Andy characters were white people trying to imitate black people using stereotypes that were demeaning to black people when you were already catching hell by being descriminated against.
If you were going to improve your status economically thru employment opportunities it just wasnt going to happen because your potential employers had already made up their minds about
the mentality and capability of black people thru these stereotypes. Amos and Andy - while we secretly listened to it and had fun listening to it - we knew the reality. But the world at large was shallow and kept us victimized by these stereotypes.
When it finally came to TV - we also enjoyed it. But it proved to be too damaging and resistant to our efforts for equal opportunity.
So we protested loud enough to get it banned from tv. The show just came about at the wrong time in our history. Now in a time when Colin Powell could have been our president If he had chose to run,the show would be ok. The public at large is no longer as shallow as people were in those days.
