Find a big city that has alot of options.
There has to be someone who will appraise these stamps for you.
Call a couple of jewlry stores and ask (they may know someone).
Call the main post office and ask them if they know where you could get them appraised.
Put an add in the paper and ask for someone who appraises stamp collections.
And I can almost guarentee that whoever you find to do the appraisal will either be interested in them, themselves or will know of someone who will be.
Here are some links that might help you get started.

You should try to get an appraisal for them. There are coin and stamp dealers in most cities. That will give you a rough idea on what to ask for them should you decide to put them up for a live auction or sell them to a dealer.
Do go to a reputable dealer, if the place seems like a pawnshop its okay to just pack up and leave.
There are also hobbyist magazines particularly for stamp collectors where you may be able to place a small ad..or an online community of stamp collectors who would be interested in hearing what you have.
I collect Animation cels and you would be surprised to find that I buy and sell all of them online through private sales.
I would think the stamp hobbyists have such sites. Just research before you sell. Good luck on your surgery...I Hope your on the mend quickly.

When I was 12 and my father passed away, my mom was in the same exact situation. My father was a huge collector of stamps and had been collecting for 30+ years. After he passed my mom had significant debt from medical bills and had to decide what to do with the stamp collection. She kept a small stamp collection for my sister, brother and I and sold the rest. She got less than 1/2 the value of the stamp collection which is typical. I'm a basebal card collector and can tell you when you sell something you know little about, people take a lot of advantage of you.
My thought ... sell it ... it might have made him very happy, but he would have sold it all for your health.
ps. August 11th is a shitty day .. My father passed away August 11th, 1989. :(

Several points: an appraisal is a good idea, but you MUST be prepared to pay for it! Stamp dealers have to eat, too, and they can't spend six hours looking at your stamp collection without getting paid for their time. A free appraisal is probably worth exactly what it costs!
If you sell to a dealer, you will get the wholesale price, not the retail price. Yup, those nasty old stamp dealers have to pay rent as well as eat!
Take a look at this website - it has a lot of good advice: http://www.virtualstampclub.com/inherit.html
To get much money out of a stamp collection, you have to spend some time. If someone else is going to spend the time, then you will get less money. It's that simple.

well you need to see what your options on selling them are a place that will examine them and give you a price would be the best.. but you do know if you sell it you wont get it back. i can understand tough times like that my step dad had to get some serous surgery and he sold some land in the caman islands that was left to him and his brothers by there father. but now he wishes he could have it back because its the only thing left of there fathers. good luck and i hope every thing works out

Contact a local auction house. Look in the yellow pages. This really needs to be in a professional auction and not something you try to value yourself on Ebay.
