If you counted one per second every day and night continuously, it would take about 31 and a half years!

At a 3GHz clock rate, it would take 1/3 of a second at one count per clock pulse. You would need a 32 bit counter, and a look ahead carry optimized adder that could settle out a worst case rollover in 333ps. Nothing hard really... for Intel that is.

Assume that, on average, you could pronounce:

1-99,999 in 1.5 seconds
100,000-999,999 in 3 seconds
1,000,000-1,000,000,000 in 4.5 seconds

then it would take you
4,498,349,994 seconds
74,972,499.9 minutes
1249541.665 hours
52064.236 days
142.6417 years (365 days/year - no leap years)

So if you did absolutely nothing else but count....you'd be dead long before you got there.

Even for just a million, by the numbers above, it'd take you about 33 years.

V=DxT
Velocity=DistancexTime
If you counted one per second, that will probably take 30-32 years to count to one billion. Remember:
V=DxT

I am using a stop watch to time myself and see how long it will take for me to count that high. I am up to 234 right now. Once I get to 1,000,000,000 I will stop the stop watch and let you know how long it took.

A very long time--enough to make you wonder, why am I doing this?

depends on the speed of counting:

time = distance / speed

distance = 1 000 000 000
speed = ?? m/s
