I like to travel alone as well, and my personal favorites are: Bali (stay away from Denpasar and Kuta Beach,) Kyoto, Japan; India, right outside of Rishikesh the "yoga capital" of the world, Toledo, Spain and Playa del Carmen, which is outside of Cancun.

Bali is absolutely magical--aside from the natural beauty, the people live in a way where there is no division between the spirit world and "real" life. There are offerings everywhere, and some ritual or ceremony goes on almost every day.

Kyoto, Japan is traditional meets the future. If you can stay in a ryokan or even a monastery (some offer hospitality to female travellers--try one on Mt. Koyasen) you will be steeped in centuries old ritual, which I find to be inspirational.

Toledo, Spain is very much the way it was in El Greco's day--narrow cobblestoned streets and corner shrines and Catholic processions.

If you fly into Cancun, head for the bus station, where you can board a bus with other "locals"--some carrying their live, clucking groceries!--for Playacar. You can rent a hotel right on the beach and explore Isla Mujeres, or Tulum or even go all the way to Chitzen-Itza.

On my wishlist is Lithuania and Estonia, and most likely as a solo female traveller. Either way, I'll be sure to bring a sketchbook and journal!

If you are looking for inspirational place then try a church. But if you are looking forward to getting out in public then make up your mind to get out and enjoy yourself, There are so many place where you can go where it can be tone down to the level that you wish to be in. But if you want to go out in public and be alone then why not just stay home and watch TV or turn on your radio.... There are museums, play houses, movies there are many places that you can go, What I fail to understand is why and maybe you should have explained that in depths...... If you are hurt by something that has happen in your life then getting out can be good for you. But avoiding people can not work in your best interest. I wish you the best and have a nice day out.............. P.S. being 45 does not make you an old woman so maybe just maybe you should rethink your situation. And look at yourself in a different light.........

Try Madeira, Portugal. It's an island in the Atlantic with 0% crime, got sub-tropical climate, most of the hotels are four and five stars and the island hosts most wonderful collection of plant life. Most of the tourists there are above 35 and the whole point of visiting is to enjoy nature, good food and relaxation. Season is all year round, peak being flower festival in April.

I'm not sure where you're from or how far you want to travel but the Channel Islands situated between UK and France would fit the requirement. Guernsey maybe!

if you are in the Uk the best a cottage on the coast, abroad you are better off going with a good singles holiday company that way you can be part of a group but also be free to go off on your own. make sure you chose a good company though where you are guaranteed your own accomodation

Dark alleys, those lights, they are so inspering, especially if you partake in the white powder sold under them. Seriously if you think the world is that unsafe stick to inspirational internet sites, no bad guys there.
