the key phrase is... "like theyre better than us"
Someone who was not trying to offend black people (or any person for that matter) might have said "like they look down on us" or something in that range. Like theyre' better than us sounds like youre saying blacks are not even equal to whites?
It is offensive. Every race has extroverted, over-confident people who will not back down from others. (This is basically what cocky means i believe) and I'm sure you already know that considering you cant possibly not have run into cocky people of other races, yours included, can it be that maybe you felt a little bit superior to black people? Why else would it be a SHOCK to you that black people can be cocky?
Also maybe blacks are not getting cockier, but your awareness of them is increasing. You probably have been spending more time around black people (by choice or force) and you are starting to place the stereotypes you have heard with some of the crude actions by some. I suggest you start looking at the individual as cocky and not black people.
Stereotypes are no good. Here is where it starts.. all it takes is one person to do something bad and you will be forever clumping all people of that race in that wrongdoing. Open your mind and Nip it in the bud now. Ignore the clearly racist comments above and take pride in the fact that you are not a part of a senseless and dying racist clan, as are the fellow posters here.
Back to the topic, I dont like cocky people in general, but I can assure you that I've run across them in every race that I've had the pleasure of mingling with.

Maybe we should have been asking the same question about whites when they started packing us into slave ships? But really what the hell does it matter? I'm curious as to how you came to this conclusion. Is it due to the fact that many of us aren't suffering so much getting educations and jobs? Don't let the media fool you lol. I think what your totally sad question really is, is "When did Black people begin to get cocky enough to think they're equal to us?" If that's what it is just ask. I'd be happy to answer you. I really thank God that I was raised with diverse people and have a diverse group of close friends and coworkers because if I left it up to people like you, I would think all white people we're just your type. Maybe you should turn off your TV (because I have no doubt that this is where this is coming from) and meet some people....... After you take your head out of your a s s.
P.S Did you really stop to think that at least some of us actually WOULD take offense?

No offense to bigots...?
Doesn't it seem like bigots have started getting cocky like they're better than us.
Racism is all in the minds of ignorant people.
Fight the stupidity. Make friends with someone different than you!
Easy almostmom do not forget who enslaved the blacks in Africa and sold them to the slave traders in the first place. It was other tribes of black people. I am white. my ancestors were white. No one in my family ever owned slaves. no form of slavery is ever right. The people responsible for it in that time are all long since dead. I do not like racism of any type and will teach my kids the same. Blame those responsible not those with the same skin tone! lots of luck!! We are all the same and that is a fact.

No African Americans are not getting cocky and have this perception that they are better than Caucasians. I have black friends who aren't like that by far. Of course, we have some in every race or ethnicity not only African Americans.

Yes, I grew up in a black neighborhood and back then they were all nice, today I wouldn't walk in the same hood even in the daytime.

Not really, but if they were "arrogant", they just might have a reason to be! Black people have struggled forever in The U.S.A., and it's not over, unfortunately :(
