and where the ground is covered with prickly heather and thistles, why would the people adopt the kilt, as a form of dress?

Tradition dictactes that nothing is worn under the kilt for the following reason. Apparently in battle, to scare the opposition they used to raise their kilts in order to show their bare tackle to the enemy to show how tough & un-afraid they were.
When you think about it, if you were surrounded by 5000 men showing their tackle like that you would be scared sh*tless, wouldn't you?
Believe it or not, the choice is yours.

I've heard that kilts originated because they didn't get caught in all that underbrush, as they were too short. Other, longer forms of clothing were constantly getting caught.

Kilts are made of wool,the socks are long and wooly too and therefor very warm,besides all the porridge we eat puts hairs on our chests- aye, the women too!

well, i guess since ppl back in the old days don't take shower as much, it really tends to stink down there and the kilt helps with ventilation...

Actually that's quite simple! Their kilts were originally wool. Can you imagine having WOOL rubbing against your crotch???

to wear a kilt is a matter of pride.....honour of belonging to a certain clan......despite it being cold or wet...this is one tradition I personally would hate to see die out
