Do NOT bathe your ferret every week like the first poster suggested. The more you bathe your ferret, the more it will stink. The only time you should bathe a ferret is if it gets into something that gets their fur dirty.
Try searching for ferret information on Yahoo and Ask Jeeves. That's what I did and found a lot of information when I first started to own my two ferrets. Also, ask your vet for advice.

Okay, first off, are you keeping it clean? Are you changing it's bedding at least weekly and are you washing out the whole cage at that time? They litter boxes need scooped twice daily and washed out weekly, with soapy water. Are you changing the hammocks frequently?
Then, what are you feeding? Read the label! One or two of the first five ingredients derived from fish? You'll have smell if you feed that. Foods that include protein sources from chicken or lamb won't make your ferret smell quite as bad.
When was the last time you bathed the critter? You shouldn't bathe them more than once a month, because that makes them smell worse faster. Their bodies are only trying to replace the oils they lost in the bath and that works against everything you were trying to accomplish.
Another thing, have you cleaned his/her ears lately or ever? Ferrets ears get dirty and the stuff that collects inside their ears can smell to high heaven, so learn how to clean ears. Have a vet or someone who knows what they're doing show you. It's a bit tricky, cause a ferret is not going to hold still for THAT!!!
I assume that you got your ferret at a pet store, so it's most likely descented and spayed/neutered, right?
If not, having that done sometimes helps.
That's about all I can think of. Ferrets will always have a bit of a musky smell, but not terrible, so you better get used to it.
One of mine actually smells like corn chips when he's sleeping.
Good luck to you and your fert.

Your ferret should be descented, if not get it done and that will help some. There are special shampoos for ferrets and that will help some also. But ferrets will always have a bit of a wild smell to them. It is the nature of the animal.

it is not good for ferrets to be bathed alot it dries out their skin but i do give mine a bath when they are either really dirty or when my allergies get real bad i use baby shampoo it is very gental does not irritate the ferrets skin and helps the natural stinky smell of ferret for a longer time i really hate the smell of the deoderizing ferret shampoos and it really has not worked but once a month using baby shampoo has worked wonders for mine and i have 7 ferret and they do not smell bad you can also get more info at www.everythingfert.com good luck

I used to have ferrets. You can get a ferret deodorizing shampoo at your local pet store that worked really well. Just bathe With the shampoo once a week and your problems will be solved.

No ferret in this whole world will ever smell good. To lessen it you can always bathe your ferret, spray it with ferret cologne, get it neutered/spayed, descented, and change its bedding and litter pan at least 3 times a week.

They sell ferret shampoo at the pet shop. Don't use human shampoo, it irritates their skin. Ferrets have natural musk glands. Most ferrets sold at pet shops have those removed. If not, you might have to have this operation preformed for him. Good luck!
