Catfish has typical dorsal and apectoral spines (whiskers) on each side which are responsible for the stings and envenomations. These mostly result in puncture wounds and scrapes but rarely do they result in a serious injury (unless the wound becomes infected, of course).

The Stingers are on their face on both sides of their mouths, they are the long things hanging from their face.

The Barbs on Catfish Whiskers Are not Dangerous at all, They just hurt a lot! ( you'll get a little nauseous, that's all.)

Depends on the type of catfish.
Hey you ever heard of the candiru' ?
http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/animals1/catfish/candiru.html
"Spines around its head then pierce the scales of the fish and draws blood while anchoring the candiru in place." " When candirus parasitize humans, it is usually only when they are skinny-dipping while urinating in the water. The candiru tastes the urine stream and follows it back to the human."

ive got a sundrop catfish (or sunspot, cant remember) in my aquarium. its little whiskers are rough, its run them across me before when i was cleaning the tank, but it wasnt enough to bring pain, it was just like feeling a dog whisker poking your skin. its hard but not that bad. but large wild catfish i have no experience with other than fishing, and i throw them back, i dont poke/prode/feel them.
