To be eligible for SS benefits you need to first apply with Social Security and you will have forms to take to the doctor to fill out if you think your disabled or deemed disabled. Sometimes you will be denied for lack of severity, meaning, your disability is short term. OR you may be found eligible. But it doesn't happen over night, doesn't happen in a month......lenghty process. My experience, I have seen people wait 2-3 years to be approved. And in most cases you will be denied and you have to appeal it. I know, my spouse had cancer and he was still denied so I had to appeal it. Other forms of SS benefits are SSI, Supplemental Security Income....like surviors benefits when a parent dies. Just name only a couple of types of SS.

they must pay social security taxes and be at least a resident alien.
Every year I get a statement from the social security administration. It tells me exactly what I've earned and paid and what my projected benefits would be if i were to claim.
