when I shut down I lose all settings and have to re download the wireless card and all the networking info, running windows XP SP2

You actually have to "save" the configuration settings before shutting down.

Most computers have a small battery on the motherboard. Sounds like yours is dead. (They're about the size and shape of a quarter.) If you have a laptop, it may be a different shape and more difficult to replace.

It could also be something wrong with the wireless card or its connections, I suppose.
