Communication in anything but simplest terms.

Early man language, from what I understand, consisted of a series of grunts and clicks.

Today, our complex languages and abilities to translate into other languages allow us to share literature, technology and scientific discoveries with the rest of the work; not just within our own tribes.

We would not be able to travel, read, learn how to set a VCR, et al, without sophistication of communication.

I would say writing. Writing allowed for the recording of knowledge. Knowledge could be more easily passed down, including language, laws, engineering, and communication over distances...
