I have replaced the pipe screwie things under my kitchen sink because the plastic ring things were cracked so there wasn't a good seal. I have tightened these suckers down over and over and it lasts for about a week, but then the leaks start again. what am I missing? (other than knowing what these things are actually called) I'm tired of mopping up water!
I'm a single mom so really don't want to hire someone. it looks so simple...

you might need to put some kind of plumbers sealer on the pipe where it meets the other one....dont you have any guy friends??

If you live in the bay area, I'll come do it for free. If not, then take off the part you replaced and check that you didn't strip the threads. If the threads look good then go get some plumbers tape (it's white and doesn't have any stickyness to it) wrap the plumbers tape around the threads of the male pipe, then put it back together. The plumbers tape helps fill in any gaps in the threads that might exist.
If the threads look screwd up then get a new part and plumbers tape and fix it again, but with the plumbers tape.
Hope this helps, if you still have a problem then talk to someone at the hardware store, and they should be able to help you.

im hoping we are talking about the same thing, but your plastic thingies are washers. if youve replaced them, with the right size, maybe your flange, screwy thing, is cracked.
after drying the area, where does it leak from? if it comes from the joint, or a place where you have pipes connected, perhaps you forgot to put plumbers tape or you over tightened it.
i cant really tell without seeing. look real good for any cracks and if it leaks while the water is on and off or just on

There may be rubber o rings, gaskets, bushings in the fittings. These get old, crack, dry out. It might explain why you can tighten up the fitting to prevent leaking for a while.
The next time someone asks you what you want for a birthday present, tell them "a plumber."
