A few years ago they would give them to anyone who asked..but theatre managers have told me that the production companies don't want people selling them on places like ebay so they don't give them away anymore. This could just be in certain places...so I'd go ask your local theatre.

*** Found an answer for you from a real movie theatere:
Q: What do you do with the movie posters and promotional cutouts once a movie is gone from the theater?
A: "They come down. Basically they're the property of the studios and they get sent back or destroyed. We may get copies of posters from the studios to give away at special events. We are a sponsor of 'Alive at Five,' a concert series in Stamford, and we give away T-shirts and hats, posters. There's always a long line at our booth.
"If there's an opportunity to use [them] for a fundraiser, such as a school in need, we do that. They're also used for incentives for employees."
That's from an article about The Changing Times of Movie Theaters in The Connecticut Post Online.
See article: http://www.connpost.com/news/ci_4116524
So basically there property of the studios (Alliance Atlantis, Paramount, 20th century Fox, ect) I guess the studios would keep them for using them in other movie sets were you often see smartly placed ads for other moveis by the same studio. Or the studio would put them up at there headquarters to show all the posters for all there movies they've made. They might also sell them too. See the answer by: njagalamalaya aswell, because she is right that the studios don't like people selling them on Ebay ect.

Movie posters technically are the property of the film distributor. They request that the posters are sent back, but that usually doesn't happen. We've always either given them out to employees or just kept them in storage. I guess some theatres might throw them away too. If we tried to sell them on EBay or something our company would track us down and fire us because they aren't meant to be sold.

Generally there is a company that works for the industry that delivers the film and the fliers. After the run they pick up the film and the fliers to take to the next place it is running.
