The MAIN difference:
I have come to believe that the main difference between a democrat and a republican is that democrats love the USA and all the freedoms it stands for while republicans want to change the USA into a totalitarian state where majority rules and minority groups have no rights or voice.

1. Big Government and social programs:
Democrats and republicans both for the most part believe that there is a need for 'controlled' social programs but there needs to be strict guidelines to hinder abuse. Both parties agree with that.

A lot of republicans like to twist the truth and say that democrats want government to have more social programs, etc... which is not the case.

What they fail to see is they have been successfully manipulated by the republican party into falling for the 'big government' stereotype.

Why did the republican leaders want to do this? = in order for them to be able to deregulate industries and corporations. They classify deregulation under the umbrella of 'big government'. And most republicans fall for this not realizing that is ruining our country.

Deregulation by the republican party over the past years has resulted in skyrocketing cost of living. You see this with the deregulation of energy companies, phone companies, cable companies, etc....

Everytime I have watched a debate on CSPAN concerning deregulating something, they always promise it will result in lower prices; BUT EVERYTIME, it results in an increase.

2. Civil rights and liberties:
Republicans believe that the majority overrules minority groups. They believe in a totalitarian system whereas democrats believe that our system was designed to protect all individual civil rights.

3. Separation of church and state:
It always amazes me how republicans will argue to my face that the forefathers did not intend to have this separation. They argue this as though it were a good thing and that should also explain the difference in mentalities to you. They not only want religion combined with the state, they want only ONE religion combined with the state. Democrats see how this would result in going backwards in progression and end with a dictatorship.

4. Diplomacy versus unilateral war:
Democrats are not against going to war. I participated in the Gulf War. That was for a just cause because an ally had been occupied and there were many other nations participating. Republicans believe that the USA knows best and if other countries don't obide by our rules then they will pay the price with their lives.

For this reason (that they know best for the world), they believe they it does not hurt us to ignore the rest of the world and the UN.

That's a few.

The Republicans or Grand Old Party are similar to the Conservative "Tory" Party in Britian and Canada. They are financially and socially conservative. Generally served by Big Business . Think of the tv show MASH, Frank Burns was a republican as was Colonel Flagg the CIA agent and Probably Charles Winchester and Hot Lips .

The Democratic Party is the US the party that used to represent the working class, blacks, jewish people basically people who immigrated to the US and were poor.
They are more liberal, although not always far left any more than all GOP are far right.
Using our MASH illustration Hawkeye Pierce was definitely a Democrat as BJ Hunnicutt and probably Trapper John and maybe Radar, if his mummy let him.

It's only been in the last 20 years or so that the parites have become so polarized. After Watergate mainly and when the late Lee Atwater developed the Attack political ads in the mid 1980s. Hope that helps.

Democrats and Republicans the two main political parties in the United States.

The Republican Party is really a coalition of small conservative groups. They are now led by the religious right.

The Democratic Party is basically made up of every sort of liberal in the country. There is no dominant group in this party, which is part of the reason that the Republicans are in control of the government right now.

Overall, both are fairly useless.

Certainly I'll explain. They are just two sides of the same coin. If one doesn't get your vote the other one will. They both work together anyway and get contributions from a lot of the same contributors. The Republicans get more money, thats why they are ahead. The two party system is broken and just getting the democrats into power is not the panacea it would seem to be.
We have lost our democracy.

I love beach bum. She hates the republicans.

Economically, the version at the moment is rather basic. Republicans believe in provide-side economics, Democrats believe in call for-side economics. this signifies that Republicans like some thing that reward the richest human beings (those who administration provide), and so want reducing authorities regulation of company and reducing taxes first for companies and wealthy persons. because of this the tax cost on those who artwork is a few thing like 25% (universal intense marginal cost), at the same time as the tax cost for capital functional aspects (funds earned from investments) is about 15%. Democrats believe the using rigidity in economies isn't the provision of a good, yet particularly the decision for for it, so as that they need rules that help the middle and decrease training -- those who make up very just about each and every of the decision for (those who're doing just about all the procuring). consequently, they suspect we would want to continually shop a watch on businesses (regulation), and shop a sought after tax cost that helps the middle and decrease training.

Socially speaking, democrats are generally more concerned with helping people -- thus they believe the government should be more involved with people.
Republicans, on the other hand, generally believe that less government involvement is better (something that Bush is not doing at all) for the country on the whole.
These roles are currently in the process of reversing.

Each of the major political parties focuses on different aspects of the Constitution as most important. In the Preamble to the Constitution, there are five goals (values) of the US government: "establish Justice, to ensure domestic Tranquility, to provide for the common Defense, to promote the general Welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty"

Conservatives think the most important are "to ensure domestic Tranquility" (meaning to promote conformity with 'traditional' ways) and to "provide for the Common Defense". Most conservatives are Republicans, who (nowadays) want group rights (conformity with 'traditional' values) and a large government to ensure domestic tranquility (by enforcing those conservative majority beliefs). Moderate republicans (originally called fiscal conservatives) want a small government, just large enough to provide for the common Defense.

Liberals think it's more important to "promote the general Welfare, and ensure the blessings of Liberty". Most liberals are Democrats, who want individual rights and a large government to promote the general welfare. Moderate democrats don't want a lot of wasteful spending, and want to achieve their goals without causing too many problems. Democrats do have a Conservative wing, which focuses on better ethical leadership and greater protection for both groups and individuals. The main difference is that conservative democrats still don't believe in enforcing their views on the minority, even if their own personal choices would be the same as what conservative republicans would make.

The concept of promoting Justice is important to both camps, but their idea of justice differs. Most camps of the liberal parties believe ensuring Justice requires favoring defendants, preferring the guilty to go free rather than sending the innocent to prison. Republicans and conservatives believe the promoting Justice requires being harsh to those accused, even if that occasionally inflicts sentences on the innocent.

Interestingly, the spectrum is not linear, and has more than one dimension. There are other political parties who focus on different combinations of those values. For example, Libertarians want a small government (no wasteful spending) and very little Welfare (few if any entitlements), but strong on Defense. Libertarians also want lots of protection for individual civil rights, to secure the blessings of Liberty. They feel that Tranquility will take care of itself, and doesn’t need government enforcement of morality. As such, they are moderate about most issues, except for being adamant that the majority should not impose its beliefs on the minority, as part of their way to promote Justice.

So, it basically comes down to which sets of Constitutional values each group thinks are most important.
