The key ingredient does not exist. There is no one thing that will make a happy relationship. It is a complicated mix of ingredients, stirred all together until it is hard to tell what is what. While trust is important, I think it is actually forgiveness/acceptance that helps the most. After all, everyone hates when people keep trying to change them. It's better to let go of the small faults and keep the whole treasure rather than trying to weed out the bad stuff and loose it all.
