Know anyone who has had a hip replacement? or a knee? Done all the time nowadays. The hardest part is getting a sound joint between the metal appliance and the bone, but it's done all the time.

Long procedure, would have to wait till you were positively done growing, adds weight, may cut down on mobility, puts excessive stress on joints, would interfere with muscle attachment, nerves veins arteries.
It is easier in the head no real movement, no muscle attachment necessary to function.
