The plot consisted of two children in Anglesey (I think) who find an egg that they think is a stone. They keep it warm on top of the fire place and it eventually hatches into a strange creature (perhaps a seal like creature or even a seal) and swims away. Its really annoying that I can't remember, so if anyone can help, I'd be most grateful!

Gift from Winklesea by Helen Cresswell. I see it going on Amazon for a high price (used). $60 to $100. Bet you wish you had kept yours.
