One main reason why your eyes may get dry while using the computer is the following; People tend to blink their eyes less when at there computers. Non blinking can dry out the eye. Try to make a conscience effort to blink/take a five minute break every so often. Remember to sit as far back from the monitor as possible.

This is truly an excellent question!
The other postings about brightness and contrast, as well as glare screens are good too.
However, I would also reccomend an eye exam. I had a condition called dry eye that wasn't discovered until it was exacerbated by computer use. The drying of the eye can also lead to problems with eyesight as well.
In my case, I opted for portable glare screens. being a computer technician, I got 'CRT' glasses - they have a special coating to help with the glare.
Your local Walgreen's should have a bottle of atificial tears also, I sometimes use these before and after extended computer usage.
Just my two bits worth.
Happy computing!

Take breaks from the computer screen by doing something else once in awhile. It would also help if you use eye drops.

Stop staring at the screen so long? You might also try using eye drops.
