while driving down the road, my car will just die and turn off..and my check engine light stays on. when i start it up again, the rpm guadgewill go up and down without stepping on the gas....and then sometimes it has a hard time staying on. i think it may be my alternator...but not quite sure....any second opinions out there?

it sounds like it could be your alt. the reason being is that ur alt. keeps all your elelctronics runnin in the car while the engine is on. if the alternator is not charging the battery or is not producing power for electronic, then u can expect to see crazy behavior from the pannel. if u have an older car (90-99) u should be able to start the engine. while take the ground from the battey post off. if the car cuts off then it your alt. not charging the battery. if not then u have some type of major short and should take to a shop asap

The check engine light means you have a problem. You should immediately quit driving the car and have it taken to a garage which has electronic diagnostic equipment. The mechanic will hook the car up to a diagnostic computer to get a reading.
It sounds like the computer control module in your car has gone bad. Trying to drive your car will make things worse. That's why the red warning light is there.

Well, it's not the alternator because the alternator controls the electrical system if it was bad you wouldn't be able to start the car at all.
have no idea what it is tho sorry

what ever you do don't pull the negative battery cable off of your car while it's running! especially if it is fuel injected, this could cause a voltage spike from the alternator that can destroy your computer or other components.

LOL.. My husbands work car is doing the samething. Check the alternator. Take it to a Napa or Auto Zone and they will check it for you. If it's not the alternator then you might need to take it to a mechanic to see if it is the computer.
That's my husband's next step!
Good Luck!!
