Spain is a diverse and beautiful country with about 35 million people. Spanish is the main language but in Euskadi the language is Basque. Catalan is the language of Catalonia and is similar to Castilian Spanish but not the same.

The provinces are more different than provinces in many countries. In the north (Atlantic coast) you have from W to E Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Euskadi. Galicia is often wet; so is Asturias because of the mountainousness. Cantabria is beautiful and pleasantly warm, but not hot, in summer. Central Spain -- Castile, Leon, Aragon, Extramadura and so on -- has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The Mediterranean coast provinces of Andalucia and Catalonia are much mellower in winter and hot in summer. Spain also includes the islands of Mallorca, Minorca and Ibiza in the Med, the seven Canary Isles off NW Africa, and the African towns of Ceuta and Melilla.

The major cities are Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, and Zaragoza. In the northwest there are Vigo and La Coruna, in "el norte" there are Oviedo and Santander. In Euskadi the chief city is Bilbao. In the south you have Toledo, Granada and Malaga.

Spain has most of Europe's best football teams, like Real Madrid, Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla who won the UEFA cup last season, Valencia and even the small town of Villa Real. Some great golfers come from Spain such as Seve Ballasteros and some tennis stars like Carlos Moya but the Spanish are not yet much good at rugby, cricket or other major sports and they are even worse than Britain in the Winter Olympics.

The economy has done well over the past 30 years and Spain is now pretty much level with the rest of W Europe in standard of living. And doing well enough to host lots of immigrants from NW Africa, some of them illegal, who do the dirty jobs for low pay that no-one else wants, and pick the olives.

Unfortunately most Spaniards belong to the repressive organization called the Roman Catholic Church. But otherwise it is nowadays a very liberal country and for example legally approves gay marriages and abortion.

Historically what is now Spain used to have a Celtic culture (c500 BC to 100 BC) and then became part of the Roman Empire. Then the Romans were driven out by the Vandals (who gave their name to Andalucia). Later it became part of an Arab Caliphate, except for Cantabria and Asturias. After c1100 AD, Christian kings gradually conquered it from the Arabs. The country became politically unified when Ferdinand of Castile married Isabella of Aragon (or was it the other way round?) c1500 AD, and then they went off and conquered Portugal (1580 until 1640) and most of the Americas. This was a cruel conquest, imposing their language and their dreadful religion on the indigenous people and destroying much beauty for greed for gold and making people slaves. In the 20th century Spain fell under the dictatorship of Franco (1930s to 1970s) but since then it has become a liberal European Union member.

Ola, I've been to Spain, and would like to learn more Spanish. I have visited Malaga and Valencia, also been to some lovely small towns around the Valencia region. I love the way there are oranges growing everywhere and the beaches are so clean. The market days are great. I don't like the tourist towns they are full of the people I left my own country to avoid. We usually rent out a villa when we stay there, they are beautiful, everywhere is so bright and colourful. My favourite thing about Spain is siesta! adios

The locals say you have not been to Segovia unless you have touched the aqueduct. I was forced to. I was nearly run over by a car and had to jump up on the base of the thing to stay alive. The Valle de los Caidos houses the grave of Francisco Franco. Didn't realize I was standing on it until I looked around and everyone was taking pictures. Former Kings and Queens are entombed in the catacombs of La Granja de San Idlefonso, in marble caskets. A giant chandelier made of solid gold hangs in the mausoleum. I could go on......

Well, its where Christopher Columbus came from. He was the explorer that discovered the Carribean. This discovery happened after a long war with Portugal. That is why Columbus came close to not sailing the ocean blue. But this is history significant to the United States.

Umm.... Let's see....

I know most Spaniards are avid about soccer. Excuse me, futbol.

Uhh...

One of the first explorers to go through Oklahoma was a spainard. Frinando de something. (Can't think of his name, actually. But this was waaaaaaaay back before America claimed it. Like in 1617 or something like that.)

I'm from and currently living in Oklahoma, so that is how I know. Or don't in my case. :)

That's about it. I know this was a crappy answer, but I did my best.

My ancestry was from the province of Soria in Spain. My parents spoke Castillan, which is essentially Spanish but somewhat different. The best way to learn English is to speak it as much and as often as you can.
