Depends what you like. I'm doing a lot of chick lit at the moment - An undomestic goddess might be worth a go, if you want something mindless, but entertaining. Oh, and it's a bit sloppy / romantic too.

Hints on genre would be handy . . . But Bill Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy is very absorbing; Orwell's Down & Out in Paris & London a good one to pick up & put down; John Fowles' The Magus one you'll never forget, though very strange.

I love Diana Gabaldon, she is one of the most believable authors I have ever read. Her characters come to life. The books are long but full of action-the books are a great read. I have read them twice. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Cannot recall the author, French I think, but it is in English.
The Blue bicycle trilogy.
I got it once for a girl when we went on holiday, she couldn't put it down.
