Use the sun as a guide. and the nomenclature of NEWS or North East South and West, where North is above you and south is below you. The sun would rise in the east and set in the west, using your hands as a guide, your right hand would be EAST and left hand would be west. Where you face with your right hand in the east and left hand in the west would be North and your back would be south. Try it today during sundown. Stand where your left hand is on the west side and your right hand at the east side. Where you face is going north and your back is south. At night, the northern star, which is the brightest since it is I believe Venus (pls check I might be wrong), helps guide seamen of old to the Northern distance. Also the star structures like sagitarius and the like would allow for location mapping using the starlit sky. In grade shool science, you can try and make your own compass by getting a needle and magentizing this. Place the needle through a piece of foam or cork which would allow it to float. Place your construction in a glass or pail of water to allow it to float and turn freely. It should point NORTH to SOUTH. Now depending on where the sun is, it would show you NEWS or North East West and South locations.
