Not an expert Steve, but have you checked the distributor, which is before the plugs and leads.

could be a number of things
find out which one it not firing on first, too do that, remove the plug leads from each spark plug while the engine is running, be careful tho not to get a shock, when the engine runs the same as it does now with one of the leads removed that Ur problem plug/cylinder
remove the spark plugs of each cylinder in turn, the two next to the problem one, and turn the engine over, and listen for a chuffing sound, U'll be a friend to help with this bit, if U get a this noise it means the head gasket has gone, and it will need to be replaced.
another thing U can go it to get a pressure tester, they screw in where the plug goes, and tells U what is wrong
to use one take out all the plug and screw in it to the first cylinder, turn the engine over a few times, the pressure should read about 150, a low pressure means there is a problem, put a couple of drops of oil into the lower pressure cylinder, and turn over the engine again, if the pressure goes up, the piston rings need replacing. if not then U have a head gasket gone, or a crack in the block, or head. check the water for any sign of contaminants, that would indicate a crack
i hope this helps

I'm looking. All the Renault related sites are either in French, or some other foreign language, closed, or they're some sort of forum discussion.
Google Renault Clio Troubleshooting, and see if you can find something to help you. You're probably the only person in this forum who drives one.
This is a link where you can purchase a repair manual, which you should have. It'll have troubleshooting tips in it.

some of these Clio's have one coil per cylinder changeover, one good one to the one that is missing, that should pinpoint the problem, to which cylinder, it is, or if it has ht leads it could be a crack in the distributor cap, tracking to earth, if you have a plug not firing on one cylinder, it too could be tracking to earth, i have seen that, the spark goes down the outside there is only a slight mark on the plug, to see, if after all this it is still not firing then get the compression checked to make sure its not a valve sticking, if it is you can get some fuel treatments to cure this, before all the aggro of taking the head off and having a look. good luck with this.

Check the coil which runs out of the distributor. Feel it to see if its heating up. I'm assuming its not been overheating. Failing the coil it could be burnt valves meaning one of the valves isn't opening and closing which would mean it is running on 3 cylinders all the time. Does it come on the fire on all cylinders at all? ie when its hot?
