I don't know what it is, but I can tell you that it IS the same thing we feed horses. Flax seed should NEVER be ingested raw & whole because the end of the seed is so sharp & can cause rips & tears in the stomach & esophagus & intestines of both humans & horses. I always grind mine in a coffee mill just to be on the safe side. My trainer always thought this was strange, but I wasn't going to chance anything when it comes to a million dollar animal! I feel the same way about myself...why chance it?

I'm not sure about if it is feed to horses or not but flax seed is often used as a nutritional supplement. It can be purchased in two forms: Flax seeds (milled) or Flax Oil (in pill form).
Flax seed/oil is high in Omega 3/6/9 fatty acids. Flax seeds are also a great source of dietary fiber. I mix the seeds in with oatmeal or just stick with the pills to help keep my skin healthy (I also drink lots of water and take vitamin E).

Flax seed comes from the flax plant. For humans, you grind it up and it is a very good fiber source and omega 3 source. I don't know enough about horses to tell you if it is the one given to them.
