I think you can probably book tickets on the same day you wish to visit. It's probably too late for this year, but nearby Clarence House is cheaper and more intimate; you really feel like you're seeing the royals' home (unlike Buckingham Palace where you only see the state rooms). If you can get to London next summer and are interested in royalty, book in advance for some of the limited tickets for Clarence House.

I visited Buckingham Palace and Clarence House (now the residence of the Prince of Wales, but formerly the home of the late Queen Mother) last year. I had booked in advance for the date I had requested, but I am almost certain I remember seeing people buying tickets on the day outside the Palace (albeit on a first come, first served basis). I can only speak for myself and a self confessed ardent Royalist at that, but it was worth every penny!

Do not listen to the people who say you cannot visit.

I think its probably safe to book in advance to be sure you can get round when you want to.
