You aren't overweight at all, and since you're only 12, I wouldn't worry about it. 5'4" and 130 sounds good to me. You're going to have some fat on your body. You need fat on your body. When I was your age, I was 118 & thought I was overweight, but actually I wasn't at all. I'm 5'2" and probably about 118 now. It's probably very close in body size to someone who's 130 at 5'4". I'm by no means overweight, though I think I need to start working out again so that I could tone my body. I think you're just fine. Do you play sports or are you active, or do you sit on the couch & eat junk food? You should concern yourself more with the kinds of food you eat versus how much and if you feel "flabby". Also, some simple exercises can tone your body.

You're smart to not believe in fad diets, but healthy eating is important. Don't overdo that either though b/c you'll just drive yourself crazy and binge. If you stick to 5 smaller meals a day and drink lots of water, rather than eating 3 full meals, you'll feel much better. You'll be less hungry and less tempted to eat junk food so much.

One more thing: simple sugars, or products with sugar, such as regular sodas, cakes, etc. will give you energy, but it's short-lived. Complex carbs, like potatotes, bread, etc. will give you lasting energy. BUT if you eat too much of anything, it will turn to fat, if not expended. You need to be active. Protein is the building block of muscle, and everybody needs protein (chicken, fish, etc.), so make sure you're taking in enough protein.

Calories per gram:
Carbohydrates: 4 calories per gram
Protein: 4 calories per gram
Fat: 9 calories per gram.

You NEED to intake a certain amount of fat, so make sure you get some fat in your diet, just be careful of your total caloric intake. My suggestion is to talk to a nutritionist if you're concerned. They can give you a difinitive answer. Pre-teens and teens need many more calories than adults, and since I'm not a specialist (though I studied nutrition), I don't want to give you too much advice b/c your body is different than an adults. You're still growing and changing.

Bottom line: You're fine just the way you are. If anything, just kick up the activity and stay off the couch and away from the bon-bons. :)

gypsy1274 - I didn't grow as tall as my mother. :( I'm only 5'2" and my mom was 5'6"....I don't know where my short stature came from, but it's here for good..I'm 35 and not growing anymore, but I do agree at 12, she's still growing & doesn't need to worry about her weight....130 sounds just fine to me!

Help Im 12 And Overweight

Your weight will fluctuate a lot through your puberty years, 12 included. 130 is slightly heavy for a young person at 5'4", but not really enough to worry about. Also, it may even out as you get older. Crash diets are really dangerous when you're young, because they can mess up your development into a young adult. Just be active and don't worry too much about it unless your weight increases significantly. Cheers!

That is a link to a weight chart. Find your height and it will give you a range. Also factor in the size of your frame. If you have a larger frame than 130 is just about right. You are also 12 years old. You still have some room to grow height wise. You could potentially spout a couple more inches your weight will be absolutely perfect for you. You are never to young to start exercising regularly and eatting right. I wouldn't worry about losing weight at your age. Your body is still transforming. I'd weight until about age 16-18 to worry about dieting.

The biggest question is "Are you as tall as your mother?" If not you may still be growing. If that is the case, you probably don't need to worry about your weight. If you are as tall as your mother, you may be finished growing. In that case you will probably want to make sure that you do not gain weight. Ask your school nurse if you should lose weight. If you feel that you need to lose weight, I would suggest continuing to eat as you normally do, but increase your exercise. You can talk to your Physical Education teacher about what exercises are appropriate.
PS - you might not want to listen to some people who can't even type a complete word. They may not be the best source of information.

I don't know how tall you are, but probably not. I weigh the same and I'm only 5'4" and don't consider myself fat. Some twelve year olds just fill out sooner and faster than others, it's normal.

You're not overweight, but you are what is considered 'at risk of becoming overweight'. So you just need to make sure you watch what you eat and take plenty of exercise. If you can keep to 130lb, that would be great. Take care : )
