No, especially after George Dubya Bush has screwed around with it to help his friends.

The system is overly complicated. Average citizens have to file taxes and the system is so complicated they need to buy special software or hire accountants to figure it out. Then in terms of what they get for their money they are short changed too. Other countries provide free health care, free doctor house calls, free college education, and a better welfare system. American taxes seem to get swallowed up into government agencies never to be seen again. Then of course there is the Bush policy of screwing the poor and giving back to his rich friends.

America would do well to close the IRS and begin again with a very simple system.

The problem is in the complexity of the tax laws and codes. No one, including the IRS, understands it. The system itself is not as bad as the politicians and press make it out to be. The fact is the wealthiest Americans shoulder the lions share of the tax burden. The top 10% of wage earners in our country pay more than 50% of the taxes. The middle class pay the rest. The poor pay little or no taxes. In fact most poor actually get back more than they pay via the earned income credit. Is this fair and balanced? It depends on who you ask. The rich probably think it is unfair to them. But they are reaping the benefits of doing business in our society so why not pay a little extra. The middle class seem to be paying their fair share and the poor don't really have anything to pay with. In my opinion it is fair, not balanced, but fair... a balanced, flat tax would be more unfair as it would shift more of the burden to low and middle class Americans. I say leave it as is... but simplify the laws, forms and tax codes to make them more simple, straight-forward and understandable.

No, but it ain't too far off. It's just too complicated. The tax code doubled in size since 2000, and that (along with the recent tax xuts) is a shame. There should be a standard personal deduction, and a simple graduated marginal scle based on taxable income. And that's about it.

"Fair and balanced tax system" is an oxymoron. Anytime you get politicians trying to gain an unfair advantage for their contributers, there's gonna be problems. PS: Americans pay a far less percentage of their income in taxes compared to the rest of the industrialized world.

Sure, if your rich. Looks fair to me from that perspective.
If your poverty level looks good there too.
the middle classes are getting screwed from both ends and that is unfortunate cause the middle supports the poverty stricken folks with toys for tots, etc and the rich have their glass houses and are full of greed they wouldn't dare help someone out.
So no it'snot fair, taxation is a ruse to you, YOU PAY criminals IE: govt' legal drug dealers, theives and sex pollutants to defend you from citizen criminals.
That's the truth and I'm sticking to it.
Now according to the patriot act that classifies me as a government terrorist.
