Yes... this is homework, but I'm completely stomped..

Here's the situation: there are three animals that need to cross a river: a dog, a cat, and a mouse. Only one animal can go across at a time, BUT if the dog is left with the cat, the cat will be eaten. If the cat is left with the mouse, the mouse will be eaten. How do they go across the river one at a time without any of them getting eaten?

I'm thinking that the cat has to go first because the dog will not mess with the mouse... but then if I take either the dog or mouse over next, either the cat or the mouse will be eaten. Any ideas?

My dad suggested that I let the cat eat the mouse, and the dog eat the cat - and they all go over in one trip... (in the dogs stomach--but then 2 of them will be eaten...) ??

Take the cat over first, go back for the dog, take the dog when you get back to the other side leave the dog and grab the cat, go back to the mouse, get the mouse and leave the cat, take the mouse to the dog, now go back and get the cat

How is the mouse stopping the dog from eating the cat before they cross the river? I'm thinking the cat is toast regardless, it's just a question of whether or not the cat decides to take out the mouse before the dog gets him. The dog is the only sure bet here. Best case scenario, the dog and mouse make it and remember the cat fondly.

it didn't say that they had to be alive, just to cross the river, and i don't think the dog would actually eat a cat, maybe chase it up a tree, but eat i don't think so.....i would take the dog first, leaving the cat and mouse there, then come back to take the cat and the mouse that is in the cat's mouth on over.

The mouse should cross first, then in hungry greed the cat will follow. And the same for the dog.
Does that work?

Cat goes over. (leaving dog & mouse).
Mouse goes over, cat comes back.
Dog goes over. (now dog & mouse are on the other side)
Cat goes over.

This question has several different variations.
How are they getting the boat back and forth?

I've solved similar puzzle like this one before but they were able to go 2 at a time on a boat. Your puzzle seems incomplete unless you can eat each other or something. There's no way only one at a time gets to cross and not get eaten by one of the animals. Please double check this puzzle and see if there are other details you might have left out.
