To my horror this morning, my hamster was limping and it looks like he ate his own foot.. No bleeding only bone sticking out. Being it is Sunday I cant get to my vet today. He is eating but I feel sooo awful as I don't know why this would happen. Anyone with any related issues please advise. I have already been told it may be a neurological issue.

He probably got it caught in something. DO NOT put antibiotic ointment on it...it is deadly to hamsters. Your vet will need to see him and remove the bone sticking out and suture the wound closed. He can put him on a SAFE antibiotic, which there are only a couple of kinds for hamsters. Keep him clean and warm until you get to the vets.

i've never heard fo such a thing. is it possible he got it stuck in/on something & chewed himself free? did a search of the cage find nothing?make sure u get him to the vet as antibiotic treatment may be needed to prevent infection and the vet may need to try to move the bone and/or stitch the skin in order that the bone does not remain exposed. i'm guessing there is no more bleeding or he wouldve bled to death by now. u should prob take out his wheel for now to prevent re-injury.

My sister in laws ferret ate his own tail last week, but she knew that his cage had accidently crushed it. Maybe your hamster had hurt his leg or got bedding (that pretty coloured cottoney stuff) wrapped around his leg cutting the blood supply off. Sometimes an animal will chew on itself to try to stop the pain of an injury and chew a limb off. Just try to keep his leg very clean overnight and see the vet tomorrow. A little antibiotic cream wouldnt hust if he wont lick it off.
