I'm new to WiFi and home networking but I'm planning to set up a wirless network at my home with approximately 6 different computers connected to it. Is it possible to assign the ammount of bandwith each computer can use? Also can anyone recommend good wifi home networking software?

Yes it is. You will however need to have an intermediary service in between to control the amount of bandwidth between the PCs' and the router. Most routers do not come with the ability to control the amount of bandwidth at a network node level.

You will need to setup a proxy server that would 'collect' requests from your PCs' and forward the requests to the router or firewall. A proxy server will also cache all requests and hence when a similar request is made by another user, it is served much quicker and at the same time saving bandwidth.

Below are a couple of products you can use:
> Checkpoint Floodgate - http://www.checkpoint.com/products/floodgate-1/index.html

> Charles - http://www.xk72.com/charles/index.php

> WinGate - http://www.wingate.com/

If you can provide further information on what you wish to setup on your wifi network, I could possibly suggest a number of options.

The software comes with the wireless router. It is actually installed there. One should not need to install any software on any of the PCs unless you want to do something propeller hatted like monitor bandwidth usage. LOL

Your initial question about bandwidth limits is also router dependent; some allow you to, others don't. In most cases, whether the router allows you to alter it's settings or not, it will have it's own method for dealing with this. Why would you anticipate this being an issue?

You don't need to limit the bandwith of any of your computers. The WiFi network is like radio waves. each computer will be able to pick up the signal at full strength if the range is not a factor

Probably is a way but you will have to buy some highly sophisticated software to do it, maybe even a server. YOu aren't gonna have any free weekends that's for sure.

Not sure, but you definitely can limit the number of computers with access to the signal.

Don't try to do that.

Let your WiFi router(s) normalize the traffic. That is one of the
things it is designed to do.

I use Linksys devices.

Best wishes and have fun but be safe.

I believe it depends on the frimware inside your router, some will let you, others don't.
