using system restore by going to Start> Programs>Accesories> System Tools.
It is best to make restor points when your computer is working the best, then if somethign is a little messed up in the future, go back, and it should help. Just becasue it is System Restory doesn't mean you shouldn't save things on a Disk now and then.

there are many good recovery tools for windows xp,firstly you have your windows xp disc,as defualt this can be classed as a restoration tool as yu can restore your pc to a clean state after a severe infection ect
then there is the system recovery disk,a disk supplied to you with the computer when you buy it,this will restore your computer to its "factory settings",which basically means the way it is when you get it out of the box, this can mean in some cases windows xp+all security software and service pack 2 + all drivers
there is then system restore which is part of system tools(programs>accesories>system tools),this takes snapshots of your p.c at certain times (restore points)and these can be used in the case of a system crash or a program malfunction
finally there are 3rd party software such as norton go-back which is basically a rip off of windows system restore, but a bit more technical, and there is a program called norton ghost which creates a ghost image on a seperate disc for instalation in the event of a system disaster
personally myself i reckon "windows system restore"is the best of these as it most reliable and its free
good luck
