How can my grass look so alive and green before I cut it, then it looks like it has patches that are dead??? I thought that It might be I was cutting it to close to the ground, but I get the same result when I leave two or three inches of length.

First off, what type of grass do you have and where are you located? You should always cut your grass at the recommended height and never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade when mowing.

It could be an insect or disease, but I wouldn't recommend spraying for anything until I knew what type of grass you have, or if you knew for a fact you had an insect or disease!

Make sure you are giving your grass the proper amount of water and fertilizer, and mow it at the proper height, for starters, then see how things go!

make sure that your blade is sharp, because whenever you cut the grass, the moisture escapes from the freshly cut blades. If the blade is dull, then the blades will be raggedy and causing it to lose moisture faster than a clean cut blade. Or the longer grass could just be covering the dead spots. Do you have grubs? Or possibly a dog that could be killing the grass with his urine? If none of these are it, it could actually be one of a number of different diseases or insect problems. But I would try to eliminate them starting with the blade issue.

Pull the grass apart so that you can see the dirt. Look for "chinch bugs" they are small black bugs with a white X on their back. These bugs are very common this time of year.

Drought followed by rain has made your grass weak. It need quite some time to regenerate. You cutting it does not help. Leave it be until it has become thick and settled again.

check for chinch bugs. Use a coffee can, cut out both ends &
stick in the ground. Fill with water & wait. If it is chinch bugs, they will float to the top.
