There are several busses that go from Tegel to the city. You can also take the bus only for a couple of stations and then catch the U7 line of the undergound at "Jungfenheide" or the S-Bahn at the same station. You can plan your route here:

There's bound to be a bus outside the airport. This will be the cheapest apart from hitchhiking.

Tegel is in the City, depends where you want to go. Either Bus (make sure you understand where you are going) or take a Taxi. They are not that expensive.

There is a bus right outside that will take you straight in. germans all speak english so you wont have any problems.
Buy a fahrekarte as this is the cheapest way and will last your whole visit

transfer??? The buses run all the time so you will have eazy access to downtown....
