you probably have many programs and services that starts on windows startup.
try to uninstall anything you do not need and remove all unwanted startup.

from start menu chose run and type "regedit" then hit

browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and delete all you do not want to start with windows

You've got a REALLY slow computer. You should upgrade, now. Are you sure you meant 56 K? That's not very much.. I have a 1987 laptop with 8 MB.

Anyway, there aer a couple ways to speed up:
1. Run Disk Defragmenter (Programs->Accessories->System Tools).
2. Run antivirus, and antispyware scans. AdAware works well for the latter.
3. Open up msconfig (I'm not sure how to on 98) and then go to Startup and uncheck useless startup items (be careful). Also head over to the services tab and uncheck useless services (again be careful). I am not responsible for any crashes your computer might have because of careless disabling.
4. Upgrade. I recommend this one.

Part of the reason may be the number of programs designed to start up when you turn on the computer.. For another thing the AMD k-6 processor is not very fast. Thats what I had before I upgraded to a new computer. You can go to the start menu and click on run, then type in msconfig and enter. That will brin up a list of all the programs that start when you turn on your machine. You can uncheck programs you don't need to automatically start. Be careful that you don't uncheck something that is necessary. If you're uncertain what to disable, ask a friend that knows.

I would have 512 meg of memory and not have a lot of programs starting up at once. Up grade to windows xp if you have the hard drive space.

Man you need to get more memory..56K isn't enough. I would suggest getting at least 256 megs.
