Depends on which tartan you want, but your best bet is The Tartan Paint store.co.sct or 'Doh!Braindrain!' of Connedyou Loch ofoldfools nr Scoltland.

They do some rather useful things, they also sell left handed nails and tacks for the left handed DIY'er, colanders/sieves of water to drink while you get your 'long weight' and a popular item, so they have 5 rows of that good all rounded 'Elbow Greese' too and they sell 'one for the weekend sir' 3 sizes -small, medium and liar and and plenty of tins of 'Petticoat tail soup'

You never seen a Petticoat running around the highlands of Scotland? not many have and they say if caught, just like a lizard they shed their tails and escape really fast, hence why you only get petticoat tail's.

Be careful though we lost a friends MIL in that store, she went down this aisle labelled 'just down this aisle and follow the arrows around the corner your'll find the answer to keeping an idiot happy for hours' well 3 hours later, happy but tired, she was still looking for it round and round the aisle! but well it proves it works.

my Friend got her a card, it says 'how to keep an idiot happy for hours please turn over' on the front of the card and inside, kept her happy all the party and not interferring in making the food and she didn't disgrace herself drinking too much neither!

a really good store

In B&Q - behind the glass hammers and the Long-Strings there's the Tartan-Paint next to the Rainbow Glue.

You have to be very careful which DIY shop you go to as some Scottish clans are still at war (think of the Celtic and Rangers Clans)and if you ask for the wrong tartan the shopkeeper could set his haggis on you or beat you to death with his bagpipes.

Most half-decent hardware shops in Scotland but because of the damn meddling Eurocrats it is only sold in lltres now and has to be labelled "plaid". Outrageous!

Most of the things that I was going to say have already been said - and I do hate repeating other peoples answers.
So - have you tried the Edinburgh Wool Shop?
