Scene: Edmonton transit bus, this past March.

Four loud drunk teens get on the bus and are told to be quiet by a passenger. The teens beat the man to death by repeatedly kicking him in the head over several minutes, as several passengers and the driver watch. Then they just walk off the bus unimpeded and disappear. They turn themselves in the next day. The judge releases them to the custody of their parents. The drunken teens' friends appear on TV news saying how they will defend their friends, and how they think their friends are good people.

That was totally disgusting! I am still upset about that particular incident. Personally I would like to see the onlookers charged, especially the bus driver. Such social irresponsibility needs to be addressed.

Recently while waiting in line at an ice cream stand in the mall I witnessed an incident in which 2 young men(adolescents?) took down another much younger one and started kicking him. I was aghast at the crowds of people giving it a glance and strolling on by. I had to do something! I may be a tiny woman but I have a very loud voice when projected and so I started to tell them to stop while striding forcfully toward them. They paid no heed, but I was getting some looks from the other people but still no help. I finally had to grab a mans arm and ask him directly to help me stop them. He did so and one of them ran away while the other stood there flexing his muscles and running his mouth. We can not allow this kind of behavior to become acceptable.

That is pretty sad. More sad because people watched as this man was helplessly beaten to death and they did nothing to help him. I am pretty sure there was more than one person who could have helped that man. I hope the judge in Canada outs them in prison for a very long time. Let them feel what it is like to lose something so valuable! How dare their friends support them- wrong is wrong, no matter what. If those kids would have beaten someone they knew and loved to death, they wouldnt be standing on them.
Under no way would I allow a judge to release my child into my custody if he was involved in a beating- i think he would prefer to stay in jail because it would be MUCH safer than to come home to me. I know that sounds harsh but i HATE criminals! I think if you do the crime, dang sure better believe i will say you have to do the time!.

i think that someone on the bus should have done something. the driver could have radioed the police before they got off without risking his safety. The teens should be tried as adults and someone should be looking at the parents because what were teens doing getting drunk and running around by themselves, someone wasn't doing their job.

I think the judge did right. Them being on the streets makes it easier for relitives of the deceased and other outraged people to track these teens down and administer some justice.

Apparently this is not an uncommon occurance there.

I think the worst part of the story is that no one on the bus helped the man out! I think it should be a crime for someone to witness a crime and do nothing to intervene.
