Dylan has a very bare, stripped down style that doesn't allow anything to hide. Because there is no flash or fluff to hide behind, you can actually hear the music for what it is and ask yourself "Is it good? Do I like it?" With nothing to hide behind, the music must stand or fall based solely on its merits.
I think Dylan stands the test of time and that he would be popular today if he arrived on the music scene as a newcomer. Whether or not he would be a commercial success is another story. Remember though, that there were plenty of commercial successes in the Sixties that nobody remembers today. It's popular to think that everything was better back in the good ole days, but that is because quality survives while the crap falls by the wayside. Popular and good don't always mean the same thing.
I wouldn't be too hard on what kids and young people are listening to today. I listened to plenty of image driven garbage when I was a kid. Eventually, my musical tastes evolved and I began to listen to music that spoke to me, not because it was popular. Don't forget, you have to spend some time listening to "bad" music before you are capable of forming an opinion on it.

Let James Blunt be evidence that "yes," Bob Dylan would be a hit. He had his own style, so people love that. There are still true music not image fans that drive the less "attractive" side of the music scene. That's what I LOVE about the House of Blues. Keep an eye on what's going down in there. They'd never have a Lindsey Lohan, Nick Lachey or Shakira concert in there. Pure music alone.
*I happen to like Shakira, I'm just saying... I get your drift.

Good question!
If Bob Dylan came out today, I would put him in A Radiohead category....very talented, but due to commercialism, his sales would stall at a million. Everything is so poppy (poopy) these days that most rock listeners under 30 think that Nickelback is a premier band. I'll take Bob Dylans Love & Theft over almost anything in this past decade of 'pop' music. Sadly, most of us wouldn't know good music if it bit us on the ***. This is how I'm reminded of how good Dylan really was and still is.

Alas you're analysis is so correct! I personally think that Dylan,Joplin, Cass and others in this vein would not make it in today's music scene because they're not in the hip=hop school and definitely don't present the type of image that is popular in today's music scene.Plus, you can actually understand the words to their songs!

three of the top blondes sound like chipmonks under water but they are hot. i would not go see them or buy any of their stuff. dylan was at a good place in time when he came out. he is one of the best ever but would be lost in the crowd today. cass and joplin did a few of the best things ever recored but i dont think they wouldnt get anywhere now. even the beatles would flop now. you have to be in the right place at the right time. most of the hot girl singers of today would not have made it back then because it would have seemed cheap. you needed talent back then. but then what do i know.

Dylan did have an image in the 60s...very Beat influenced. That same image wouldn't fly today, but don't assume that Dylan didn't have an image.

Firstly, the appearance of most pop musicians is doctored heavily in videos.
And secondly, Bob Dylan was very attractive to women in 1962 and probably still would be.

People have become shallow and more concerned with how good looking a singer/band is... It's ridiculous. Are there any really popular "ugly" singers?
I don't even listen to the radio any more. They just play crap.
