I'm a democrat, but I'm fiscally conservative...I can tell you that the reason we don't have a flat tax, is because it would tax lower income families more than they are taxed now and there are too many people that are socialist in their economic ideologies that would prevent that from happening.

Too bad, I think it is the most fair tax system possible. Everyone pays the same.

The flat tax is unfair to the poor. Here's how. The poor spend all there earnings on living so if taxes are flat they are paying just as much as the rich but have less buying power. Where as the rich would be paying the same percentage on taxes as the poor but would have a much greater amount left over (which they already have) with a larger burden of taxes being put on the poor and middle class.

Excellent question! Mostly b/c that 850 billion would be coming out of the pockets of the rich that are currently taking advantage of all the tax breaks that have been set up for them. After all they are the ones donating all the money to our elected officials. Until we do something about campaign finance reform, the fat cats and the lobbyist own this country.

Because that would require effort on the part of Congress to make such a change. It's easier for them to leave things as they are.

Also because a lot of their lobbyists enjoy the tax breaks and loopholes Congress has woven in to the laws. A flat tax would remove those.

Such a tax is regressive. It hurts the poor more than the rich. If you tax everyone at 33%, the poor have less to live on. If you tax everyone at 20%, then the rich have far more than they now have. The system now makes higher income brackets pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes. So, a flat tax will only really benefit you if you are rich.
