Republicans would favor a flat tax...Democrats are against it.
We now have a progressive tax system which taxes the wealthy at a higher rate than the poor. The lowest tax bracket is something like 10-15%. The highest is approx 38%. Republicans would favor a flat tax of 20-25%, that would not discriminate based on the size of your bank account.
What I would rather see would be a national sales tax of 15% on all non-essential purchases. (Not taxing food).
That means that our income is no longer taxed, but our purchases are. So if you make 30,000/year, but do a thing but pay your bills and buy groceries, you don't pay any taxes to the federal government. You would be rewarded for your self sufficiency.

You ARE a dumba$$! The real question is why are members of both houses afraid of it. Controlling the money is congresses traditional source of power. This is NOT a partisan issue. I am a republican and I am completely for the National Flat Tax system. Read the book by Neil Bortz and a republican congressman from Georgia whose name I forget, called The Fair Tax.

Most of the opposition to a flat tax goes from those who don't understand it. The rest comes from those who realize the can't engage in social engineering though the tax code under a flat tax.

Hey Big Shot, the GOP has controlled both houses of Congress and the White House recently. If they wanted it changed, it would be changed. How do you figure the Democrats have been able to stop them the last 6 years? Nobody in Washington is serious about changing the system. Although Clinton and GW BOTH promised to change it. It puts too much money in the hands of the people that are donating to the re-election campaigns.

Yet again an uneductaed Liberal opens his mouth...Republicans are the one that brought the flat tax to congress and are supporting it. The Democrats hate the idea because then it will get rid of class-envy andt they cant pit the poor against the rich anymore.
