Go to tools, paragraph, and click double space for MS Word. It puts a space between each line in the paper.

No great deep secret...Mainly, so that the professor has more room to write comments and make corrections on your paper. It's also a little easier on the eyes if you're the one reading a huge stack of essays. Makes sense when you think about it!
